Calculating BMR

The Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of daily calories it takes to perform the basic background tasks necessary for life.  There are two different formulas for this as it differs for men and women.  The formulas listed here are the Harris Benedict Formulae.

Male BMR = 655 + (9.6 x W) + (1.8 x H) – (4.7 x A)

Female BMR = 66 + (13.7 x W) + (5 x H) – (6.8 x A)

where W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimeters, and A is your age in years.

For me this gives a BMR of about 1,684 calories.

BMR = 655 + (9.6 x 90) + (1.8 x 170) – (4.7 x 30)
BMR = 655 + 864 + 306 – 141
BMR = 1,684 calories.

That means I burn an average of 1,684 calories each day just by living.  This is a very important piece of information to use if you’re planning a diet and trying to figure out how much exercise you should do versus the amount of calories you should eat.
