Tonight we were very fortunate to get to see a football match between two great teams. Manchester City are currently on a North American tour playing friendly matches against several teams from Major League Soccer. Although the Timbers are not yet an MLS team, they are preparing to join the league next season. Manchester City opened their tour with a friendly against the Timbers played at Merlo Field. Thanks to a friend we were able to some tickets usually reserved for season ticket holders only. Thanks Andy!
It was awesome to get to see the superstars in action. The game is so different live than on TV. The Portland Timbers fans (the Timbers Army) were out in full force and cheering Portland along. A few loyal Manchester City fans were also present, having made the long trip from England to see their team play on the tour. The game was fairly evenly balanced until just before half-time when Stephen Ireland and then Emmanuel Adabayor opened the scoring sheet with two goals in the space of just a few minutes. The second half saw several chances for the Timbers to pull one back but in the end Manchester City scored again to win 3-0.
Meaghan and I have been talking about possibly buying season tickets for the Portland Timbers 2011 league. This gave us more motivation to revisit that idea. We’re going to decide if the almost $1,000 seats will be within our reach later this year.
